Chris,
The high desert Native Americans used large thermal mass dwellings to provide 'coolth' storage to great effect. Good, modern passive solar buidings do the same, and, in fact, even in more humid areas like my KY it can be stunningly effective--- open wide your windows and doors for the overnight, collect the cold in the interior mass, and then close it all off (with radiation blocking daytime shutterings on the large windows) in the early summer morns, except for minimal light and ventilation, and then later, in the hot afternoon, go inside and enjoy how the stored coolth (often not more than 76 deg inside despite outdoor temps at 100+!) will radiantly suck your excess body heat from you in minutes.

You might not want much thermal mass in a high desert climate -.
