[Ferro List] Respiriatory Precautions

Respirators are an appropriate topic for FC workers. Silicosis is an
obvious hazard with cement dust, but some admixes and finishing
materials are sold for commercial use, often lacking detailed warnings
but needing special awareness and equipment for the amateur. One aspect
of something like a positive air rig is that its use encourages the
discipline towards proper procedures that is not ingrained in an
occasional worker. I have a self contained Scott pack somewhere in the
basement, but it hasn't been recharged or checked in 20 years. When I
needed it, I was never tempted to take off the mask to wipe my brow...

Making a positive blown mask system is not difficult, but since leakage
is not an issue, a hood is better and a lot more comfortable if used for
long periods on a hot day. Even computer style fans are enough if the
pipe diameter is adequate (e.g. the wire spiral flex ducting for dryer
vents), one just needs to avoid brush style commutation.

This would be a good subject for a 'how to' article on the FEN website.
