A 4 1/2 in grinder with a cutoff wheel is probably the most painless way to get the nuts off the clamps. Just cut one side off the nut. A stringer wire wheel does a fair job of cleaning out the threads, if you need to. Vibrating the steel with a pneumatic hammer makes a lot of the left on stuff fall off - a flat 1 in dia tool works better than most. Then a flat chisel well lift and break the material much easier.
