Yes, this would be a form of ferrocement, just not as strong as steel. I've seen where artists have used fiberglass scrim in pieces dipped in mortar and pressed onto a foam form. One thing to try would be to have the alkali resistant glass in-between two layers of steel lath to make a light but strong sandwich. No spacers are used in fc work. The layers of mesh are separated by a thin layer of mortar, just enough to cover - say 1/8 inch. Form is held by a mold or skeletal steel which could be on one side, or in the middle of the composite. Another form of fc is mortar that has a high concentration of steel or polyvinyl alcohol fibers in it. This is sprayed onto a form or placed into a mold.
A faster and better quality of c is produced by pushing the mesh into the mortar, instead of pushing the mortar into the mesh. Hope this answers your questions. A number of books are available. - chris
