Points made so far are excellent, and I would add that making a scale model of clay, plaster and wire might be useful for getting a real 3d view of what your going to be doing. Even if you see it conceptualized in your head, it is good for family or friends to be able to see what you've been daydreaming on. I would make it on a scaled board with squares, and make it so the top lifts off, for a birds eye view of the rooms and outlay. Keep the model on the job-site or maybe even include photos of it with plans, and building permit applications. If the drawing of the plans becomes too specialized than the model will express to a professional draftsman or engineer what you are thinking. someone once said, if you can't build the model don't bother with the actual structure.
You might want to look at how boat plans are made (lofting), to get some further ideas on drawing up a organic shape, and also topo maps for some different ideas. - chris
